The Calculation of Steel Silo Capacity

We usually classify steel silos into different models based on their capacities. When designing a storage plan for a customer, we need to initially determine the diameter,  the height, and the capacity of the steel silo according to the site size as well as how much material the customer wish to store.

Whether it is industrial steel silo (such as cement steel silo, fly ash silo, etc.) or steel silo used in food industry (such as grain silo, feed storage silo, etc.), their volume is divided into theoretical capacity and effective capacity. So what is the theoretical capacity and what is the effective capacity? According to experts, the theoretical capacity refers to the total capacity calculated according to the dimensions of each part of the steel silo; and the effective capacity refers to the volume of material that the silo can actually store, usually in ton(s).

The effective capacity of a steel silo is relevant both to its shape and the angle of repose of the storage material. Even two steel silos with the same shape and the same size, their effective capacities would differ if they are storing different materials.

The specific method to calculate the effective capacity of a steel silo is rather complicated, because there are many elements that should be considered during the calculation. Generally, customers just need to tell the manufacturer which kind of material they want to store and how much the capacity they need, then the manufacturer will do the calculation and design the steel silo according to their requirements.

Anyang Flyer Steel Silo Engineering Co., Ltd is a large enterprise that has been focusing on the manufacturing of steel silos for many years. It is highly professional in the steel silo construction.
